Morbid Angel & Dying Fetus - Live in Monterrey, N.L. México - Sept/04/04

In March I got to know about the Morbid Angel dates in México. The dates were originally scheduled for July, and my band Evilheart was supposed to open in San Luis Potosí on July 10, along with Eternal Damnation and Hacavitz. Sadly this date got cancelled at the beginning of June. At the beginning of July all the mexican dates got cancelled, because Pete Sandoval got injured in Europe. The dates got re-scheduled for August. This time just three days before the show, the dates got cancelled again, because Steve Tucker had health problems. The dates got re-scheduled for September and Steve Tucker left the band, being his place taken by David Vincent. Also Dying Fetus was added to the bill. So finally the day came.

I arrived late to the venue "Café Iguanas." So I only managed to see a couple songs of one of the opening bands. Then Dying Fetus took over the stage. I'm not a Dying Fetus expert, but they played my fave song "Grotesque Impalement," as well as other songs like "Praise The Lord," and "Pissing In The Mainstream." Bassist Sean Beasley was absent for this show. The sound of the guitars was crushing!! Drummer Erik Sayenga showed his great skills behind the kit. The mosh pit got pretty violent during some of the songs!!

Finally the ancient ones arrived... Morbid Angel: David Vincent on bass & vocals, Trey Azagthtoth on lead guitar, Tony Norman from Monstrosity on lead guitar and the mighty Pete Sandoval on drums. This was the first show with David Vincent in 8 years. To be honest I never imagined this could happen, due to David Vincent being fully committed to Genitorturers, but I'm glad I got to see him with Morbid Angel. The big surprise of the night was that no songs from the Steve Tucker-era albums got played. Morbid Angel opened with the classic "Rapture." I was amazed by the reaction of the crowd. Everybody were singing!! The 2nd song was "Pain Divine," with this song the mosh pit got very violent. The next songs were: "Maze Of Torment," "Sworn To The Black," "Blasphemy," "Lord Of All Fever And Plague," "Dawn Of The Angry," "Where The Slime Live," "Blood On My Hands," "Immortal Rites," "Day Of Suffering," "Evil Spells," and "Chapel Of Ghouls" with a killer solo by Trey Azaghtoth, then they left the stage and returned to close with the long awaited "God Of Emptiness," and finally with "World Of Shit."

This is one of the best shows I have ever seen. Although David Vincent had less than a month to rehearse, he played like he had never left the band. Tony Norman attack was very impressive. When Erik Rutan left Morbid Angel in 2003, I just couldn't imagine a 2nd guitarist for Morbid Angel. I didn't even think about Tony, 'cause he is a vital part in Monstrosity, so it was a very nice surprise when I knew he was the chosen one.

After the show I went to the back exit of the venue, and there I met Tony Norman. I gave him some Monstrosity pixs I took back in 2002, the "Dark In Glory" CD, and an Evilheart t-shirt. Also I met the Dying Fetus guys. I got to talk more with vocalist Vince Matthews. I gave him Evilheart CD's and t-shirts. He was very cool.

I wanted to meet Pete Sandoval, but he was busy inside the venue, and we had to leave, so I hope I will meet him next time.
